Sustainable approach to coir production at Bol Peat

21 August 2024 | Int. Greenhouse Guide |

The timely supply of high-quality raw materials for the production of substrates is an important quality aspect. There is a continuous search for smart ways, which are also sustainable for man and earth. Bol Peat has taken the next step in coir production regarding this.

The search for sustainably produced, renewable raw materials to achieve an optimal substrate mixture has challenges for suppliers. Beyond the perfect conditions for the plant to grow, there is an increasingly keen eye on sustainability.

Bol Peat’s partner suppliers in India and Sri Lanka also consider the sustainable and responsible production of coco products very important. For example, sufficient drinking water always takes precedence over water use for other purposes. Water is used to flush out excess of salts and to make the coir stable and safe. This process water is now collected and reused in crops such as bananas, coconut, rice, turmeric and ginger.

Comprehensively sustainable
According to Bol Peat, sustainability means much more than reusing water. That is why it expects its partner suppliers to ensure good working conditions and (medical) facilities for employees at the production sites. Personal development is encouraged for employees and their children. Bol Peat also focuses attention on the conscious use of energy at the coco sites.

Why coir
Coir is an important renewable raw material in substrate mixtures and for pure coir substrate. Growers worldwide make grateful use of it. Bol Peat’s coco products are produced in India and Sri Lanka, where they control the entire production process. This is important, because together we make a more sustainable world.
