In commercial horticulture, the demands for efficiency and sustainability are increasing in equal measure. With TerraCoal, Klasmann-Deilmann now introduces an innovative biochar that combines both: high crop yields and a solution to help growers reaching a climate neutral plant production. TerraCoal is produced from predominantly wood-based raw materials using a pyrolysis process and is an impressive substrate component thanks to its structural stability and nutrient buffering capacity. It also promotes biological activity as well as air capacity and thus supports healthy plant growth – a real added value for peat-reduced and peat-free substrates.
TerraCoal is available in substrates of the ADVANCED range of Klasmann-Deilmann and also in the new Growbag ADVANCED. It contributes to significantly reducing CO2 emissions in the growing medium and supports the cultivation success. Both solutions combine renewable raw materials with the highest substrate quality. While the ADVANCED Substrates offer up to 80% reduced CO₂ emissions and excellent root development, the Growbag ADVANCED offers a sustainable alternative specifically for vegetable and strawberry cultivation – based on regionally produced innovative GreenFibre Mix.

What is particularly exciting is that TerraCoal also develops its soil-improving properties in crops that are planted later or come into contact with the soil, thus contributing to long-term soil fertility. In this way, Klasmann-Deilmann is building a bridge between sustainable production and professional standards – for a greener future in commercial horticulture.
Tried and tested substrate mixtures containing TerraCoal are already available to interested companies. Further customised solutions are in preparation – please contact our expert advisors or visit our stand 05.205 at GreenTech in Amsterdam, 10-12 June 2025 to explore the TerraCoal live.
