Van Belle Nursery has partnered with Harnois Greenhouses to implement a series of controlled-environment structures. In this phase, 12 Ovaltech III freestanding greenhouses (30′ x 270′) were installed at the company’s Abbotsford facility, providing a significant boost to early-season output and crop versatility.
This transition from outdoor beds to high-performance greenhouses was driven by Van Belle’s desire for greater environmental control, especially in response to British Columbia’s variable spring weather. The project was led by Andrew Plantinga, Facility Manager, and Henry Contreras, Continuous Improvement Manager, who both emphasized the importance of finding a greenhouse partner capable of meeting technical and operational demands.
“Once I knew what the growers needed, I started approaching different greenhouse suppliers, requesting technical specifications so we could compare and make the best decision,” explains Contreras. “Harnois was ahead at every step—clearer invoices, faster turnaround times, and better availability of parts. Even if it wasn’t the cheapest option, as a full package, it was by far the best decision for us.”
From structural integrity to climate adaptability, Harnois met Van Belle’s requirements with confidence.
“We got specs on the weight rating, snow load, what the structures could handle—we needed greenhouses that could host a wide variety of crops,” says Plantinga. “Other companies hadn’t done the math. With Harnois, the certainty was there.”
The installation has already enabled measurable improvements.
“Since these greenhouses have gone up, we’ve been able to move crops out earlier in the season,” Plantinga adds.
