Featuring advanced irrigation and logistics systems, automation, and energy-saving solutions, the new greenhouse is designed to boost production and serve customers even more effectively and reliably.
A 5-acre greenhouse in Virginia
The Plant Company officially opened its new 5-acre greenhouse in Virginia, doubling its growing capacity to 10 acres. The project features innovative irrigation and logistics systems, automation, and energy-saving measures—perfectly positioned for future growth and efficiency. In partnership with Prins USA and other collaborators, this expansion enables The Plant Company to increase production and serve customers more effectively.
Expansion to Meet Growing Demand
In the summer of 2023, The Plant Company decided to expand to meet the increasing demand for leafjoy® houseplants. This included the fast-growing leafjoy littles line and popular products such as the H2O and Terraform terrariums. For the project, they partnered with Erfgoed and the GreenV group. Erfgoed handled the irrigation system and water filtration, while GreenV, along with HT Verboom and Prins USA, designed a future-proof internal logistics system.
More Efficient and Ergonomic Work Processes
The new facility is designed to enable more efficient and ergonomic work processes. This has resulted in a 20% increase in labor productivity, supported by automated spray booms and internal transport systems. Activities such as sticking, sorting, and shipping have been centralized, improving both water application precision and overall efficiency.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
The greenhouse saves energy through a high-efficiency heating system, double energy curtains, PAR Perfect shade curtains, and LED lighting. Innovative technologies such as IIVO climate software, a vertical rooting chamber, and 100% recirculation of irrigation water contribute to sustainable operations. The expansion provides The Plant Company with an ideal infrastructure to further grow both liner and finished product production. The project has been successfully completed, achieving improvements in automation, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
