Ridder Light Diffusion Screens

22 September 2025 | Int. Greenhouse Guide | Ridder

Ridder’s light diffusion (RLD) screens are specifically designed to provide full light diffusion, along with shading and reflection. RLD screens also establish a controlled environment where plants can thrive – regulating the climate beneath them, promoting healthier crops and improving overall yield. RLD screens are also available in flame-retardant versions.

Measuring Diffusion with Hortiscatter
The diffusion of RLD screens is measured by hortiscatter, which indicates the percentage of light evenly distributed in all directions as it passes through the screen’s diffusion strips and onto the crops below. The frequency of these white strips within the knitted construction of the RLD screen determines its shading percentage.

RLD screens come in a variety of shading levels, allowing growers to select the screen that best suits their crop type and growing conditions. In collaboration with fabric manufacturers, Wageningen University has developed a standardized method to independently measure both shading performance and hortiscatter of the screens, the NTA 2676 protocol.

Open Structure for Airflow
The knitted construction of RLD climate screens can be designed with an open structure to allow for optimal airflow. Between the white strips, there are open spaces that enable free air movement. Since air can pass through the entire screen, the RLD screen can be fully deployed (100%) without gaps to allow its use in conjunction with roof ventilation.

Energy Savings
RLD screens are also available in a closed structure, providing energy savings that meet or exceed the industry standard in single-layer climate screens. Growers reduce their heating costs while maintaining an optimal growing climate. The screens also allow moisture to be transported through the yarns used in their knit – ensuring high air permeability and improved humidity control.

Complete Solutions for All Growers
RLD screens offer growers a comprehensive solution for optimizing their growing climate. With high shading efficiency, superior light diffusion, significant energy savings, and either airflow (in open screens) or air permeability (in closed screens), these screens help create a stable and sustainable growing environment year-round. Across all types of greenhouses, Ridder provides the right products for maintaining the ideal climate for your crops.
