According to the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute, the number of hot days is expected to rise by 30% by 2050—and tropical days may even double. As climate change continues to impact agriculture, the need for effective, sustainable cooling solutions in animal housing becomes more urgent.
High temperatures in barns can seriously disrupt the well-being of animals. Heat stress reduces feed and water intake, slows growth, and increases the risk of illness. In the most extreme cases, it can even be fatal.
While active cooling methods like sprinklers or mechanical ventilation exist, these systems often come with high installation and energy costs. Fortunately, there are also passive alternatives that are both simpler and more cost-effective—such as applying a white roof coating.
By reflecting sunlight instead of absorbing it, a white-coated roof significantly reduces the temperature inside a barn. This helps improve animal comfort, reduce stress, and maintain productivity—without any energy input.
Why use a white roof coating on your barn?
Application is easy and flexible. The coating is diluted with clean water and can be sprayed on using a backpack sprayer, standard spraying equipment, or even a drone. One layer is often sufficient, though very porous or uneven surfaces may require multiple layers for optimal effect. After the summer season, the coating gradually wears off due to weather exposure, requiring no special removal process.
Tests have shown that this type of coating can reduce roof surface temperatures by up to 40°C and lower indoor temperatures by as much as 7°C. It’s a temporary, biodegradable solution—an ideal seasonal aid for managing summer heat in livestock housing.
