Better cow behaviour and higher work joy thanks to RUDAX lighting

19 November 2024 | Int. Livestockhousing Guide |

Dairy farming has come a long way, and now, with the introduction of RUDAX cow lighting, farmers can experience a more efficient and sustainable way of managing their dairy cows.

In collaboration with a Dutch dairy farmer, we’ve conducted research to explore the impact of RUDAX cow lighting on both cows and farmer. The results are astounding – not only did we witness a significant increase in milk production (as you can read here), but we also observed improved cow behaviour and enhanced work joy for the farm manager.

This article focuses on the effects of good cow lighting on cow behaviour and work joy of the farm manager.

The research
We compared data from a Dutch dairy farm with 100 cows of which 85 in production over four years – two years with sodium lighting and two years with RUDAX cow lighting and a HATO advised light scheme. Our research aimed to evaluate the difference these cow lighting solutions made in terms of cow behaviour and farm management.

Improved cow behaviour

After installing the RUDAX and using the HATO light scheme, several changes in cow behaviour were observed.

Contrary to expectations, cows were more willing to approach the milking robot – even in the dark. Having the lights off during the night is beneficial for cows, as it helps regulate melatonin levels (essential for milk production) and maintains a regular day and night rhythm. This reduces stress and improves overall health.

Additionally, cows were found to lie down more frequently in the designated boxes. Previously, the farmer noticed that cows sometimes laid down in the aisles, an undesirable behaviour as it can lead to mastitis. The observed change indicates that cows are more at ease, which may contribute to a decrease in mastitis cases.

Lastly, the daytime calving increased, a preferable outcome for farmers who can then assist with deliveries if necessary. It is believed that the new light scheme, which ensures a proper day and night rhythm, is responsible for this change.

Practical benefits for farmers

In our conversations with the farmer, we discovered several additional practical benefits of RUDAX cow lighting for farmers.

The farmer reported an increase in work enjoyment due to improved visibility in the barn, making it easier to observe the cows and check for any anomalies.

Furthermore, RUDAX lighting is much simpler to control and adjust, allowing farmers to tailor the lighting to the cows’ needs and provide them with an appropriate day and night schedule.

Another notable advantage of RUDAX is its durability and longevity, thanks to its design specifically for cow farming and the use of high-quality materials. The high-quality LEDs have a life expectancy of approximately 10 years, and even after that, they continue to operate at 80% intensity. This results in significant savings in costs and labour for farmers.

RUDAX: Cattle Lighting the HATO Way

RUDAX cow lighting offers a remarkable solution for dairy farmers looking to improve the overall well-being of their cows and enhance their farm management experience. With improved cow behaviour, increased milk production, and practical benefits for farmers, RUDAX cow lighting is revolutionizing the dairy farming industry.
