FIBER IS NOT FIBER

26 August 2025 | Int. Greenhouse Guide | ANDRITZ AG

In recent years, wood fiber has become increasingly popular in substrates used for various applications. However, it is important to recognize that not all fibers are created equal. The structure of wood fibers can vary significantly, and this variability can have a profound impact on their performance in different mixtures.

Within the industry, it is well understood how different types of wood behave in soil mixtures. Research projects have also started to recognize the importance of fiber structure and the critical role it plays. When we talk about fiber structure, we are referring to the morphology of individual fibers or fiber bundles. This includes factors such as the degree of fiber shortening, the amount and condition of lignin covering the fiber, and the extent to which cell walls have been broken down.

Our aim is to achieve a direct correlation of standardized parameters to applications in the agri- & horticulture industry. We are delighted to support further research into measurement methods designed to achieve such standardization in this industry, thus forming the basis for optimally designed facilities for wood fiber substrate production. Such specifications are crucial for selecting the right technology and designing the process to achieve the desired outcomes.

SUBSTRATE REFINER

At ANDRITZ, we are committed to supporting the growing media producers in addressing these challenges. Our goal is to guide our customers from the initial idea through to market implementation, leveraging our decades of experience in wood processing. By applying our expertise in fiber morphology and process optimization, we aim to help our clients achieve superior performance in their substrates.

Controlling fiber structure is essential for optimizing the performance of wood fibers in substrates. By focusing on the detailed morphology of fibers, we can unlock new possibilities and improve the quality and functionality of products across various applications.
