For technological and agricultural development in Ethiopia

Idromeccanica Lucchini has recently launched an ambitious cooperation project for development in Ethiopia, aimed at promoting agronomic training and technological innovation in the African country. The project, financed through an international agreement and implemented in collaboration with local partners and an Italian one (specialized in this type of work), aims to provide educational greenhouses and school facilities to train agronomists in the field.

With four 700-square-meter greenhouses in as many locations in Ethiopia, the project offers a unique hands-on learning environment equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The educational greenhouses are designed with special benches incorporating advanced irrigation systems, allowing students to directly experience different cultivation techniques. Each bench, in fact, is equipped with ebb and flow systems, with attached tanks and pumps that can be programmed with our irrigation models from below. In addition, there are small classrooms within the greenhouses, offering a complete, immersive and interactive educational environment.

One of the key elements of the project is the training of local agronomists. A number of Ethiopian engineers were previously educated in Italy, at Idromeccanica Lucchini’s headquarters, where they were trained in the installation of advanced cultivation systems.

This approach, aimed at imparting knowledge and skills, is essential to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project and to foster the development of local agriculture.

Training and innovation
In addition to agronomic training, the project focuses on the introduction of innovative technologies to increase agricultural efficiency and productivity. An automatic control system, equipped with temperature sensors and other devices, was implemented to monitor and optimize the environmental conditions inside the greenhouses. This technology-based approach not only improves crop performance, but also helps to mitigate the effects of climate change and manage water resources efficiently.

The long-term goal of the project is to replicate this initiative in other developing countries, both in Africa and South America. Lucchini aims to promote international partnerships and participate in future funding competitions to extend its impact in the global agricultural sector while building new ways of doing business, in dialogue with institutions and public administrations. The company’s vision is to become a benchmark for sustainable agricultural innovation, contributing to the economic and social development of local communities.

Cooperation for a more sustainable future
Our initiative not only offers opportunities for economic growth, but also promotes food security and poverty reduction in Ethiopia and other disadvantaged regions. By sharing knowledge, technology and resources, the Italian company demonstrates its commitment to a vision of equitable and sustainable global development.

Lucchini’s development cooperation project in Ethiopia is a tangible example of how technological innovation and education can positively transform the agricultural sector and contribute to the wellbeing of local communities.
