High-quality UMID® nozzles are the key to ensure effective atomisation

In hot climates, the climate inside greenhouses can become so warm and dry that growers sometimes refer to it as a desert climate. Approximately 60% of greenhouse cooling is caused by crop evaporation. However, when it is very dry, not all crops can absorb sufficient water, leading to heat stress. To address this, the use of fogging systems to cool the greenhouses and maintain humidity levels is a useful solution. An additional benefit is that this approach reduces the need to open the greenhouse vents wide, allowing more CO2 to remain inside the greenhouse.

The quality of fogging plays an essential role in this context. After all, the better the fog evaporates into the air, the lower the greenhouse temperature becomes, providing an additional control mechanism for the grower. Effective fogging supports plant health; it keeps the stomata (tiny pores on leaves) open, allowing the plant to continue absorbing CO2. Additionally, proper fogging increases humidity, enabling more CO2 to remain inside the greenhouse even with reduced ventilation. Seen in that light, the value of  water (cost of water) can be compared to the cost of CO2.   Achieving the right balance between humidity and temperature control is achievable through climate management.

Effective fogging is achieved by producing as many small droplets as possible. This creates a large water surface area that comes into contact with the air and evaporates more easily. A high-pressure fogging system pressurizes water and delivers it to the nozzles, where it is transformed into fog. It makes sense that these nozzles play a crucial role. In the high precision manufactured UMID® nozzles, water is brought into rotation at a very high speed. The nozzle’s geometry ensures that droplets are propelled away. This is different from common nozzles that press water against a pin or through a small orifice. The advantage, besides a high quality fog, is that the pressure in the nozzle doesn’t need to be as high as a result of less resistance, resulting in significantly lower energy consumption. The unique UMID nozzle design is worldwide patented.
