Urine collection at the source

15 January 2025 | Int. Livestockhousing Guide |

The CowToilet is an innovative system developed to collect cow urine and separate it from solid manure.

A cow never urinates and defecates at the same time. Nature shows us that these two manure flows should be kept apart. The CowToilet separates these two manure flows before they come into contact by collecting urine at the source (under the cow’s tail). This not only reduces ammonia emissions, but also contributes to more sustainable agriculture as this nitrogen-rich urine can be used as an alternative to fertiliser. The urine can also be disposed of or used as an added value ingredient in other sectors so that nitrogen disposal generates profits instead of losses.

Hanskamp Agrotech’s CowToilet can significantly reduce nitrogen emissions from the dairy barn, according to research by Wageningen Livestock Research. After one year of measurement, emissions of total nitrogen, ammonia, nitrous oxide, and nitrogen gas, including estimated losses during urine storage, were 38%, 33%, 18%, and 43% lower, respectively, compared with a reference barn.
